Matcho Cafe, Penang

Located in a row of heritage shop houses, tucked away in an unassuming part of town, a single neon pink sign was the only thing that had beckoned for us to come in.

We made our way up a flight of narrow stairs and found ourselves in a quaint respite from the hustle of the narrowed streets in which we had just came from.

Millennial pink and lush greens. Rattan chairs and a single neon flamingo. Soft music from a thoughtfully curated playlist and the remaining sunlight from between the dark clouds that were threatening to rain on us trickling in .

The place which appeared to be bubblegum pop quirky at first glance, exuded a calm and fresh tropical vibe.

Unabashedly pink and owning it.

We arrived in the evening and a few tables were already taken, mostly by individuals with notes and working on their laptops. Would’ve loved to explore the second floor which apparently had a balcony but unfortunately it was closed that day due to the rain.

The cafe offered mostly Matcha inspired & pink themed desserts and drinks. Their menu also has a small selection of main dishes . We placed our orders at the counter and paid before settling down in one of the lower tables out front.

Rose Pancake (RM19)
Rose flavoured pancakes, sprinkled with sliced strawberries & crushed pistachios, served with rose cream sauce and coconut ice cream

Darling in pink

This was definitely one for the Gram.
I must say that for me, the rose cream sauce was the star of the show, both on the palate as well as visually. It was beautifully light and creamy with a distinct rose flavour subtle enough to bring the stacked pink pancakes to life but not to overpowering as to remind you of hand lotion. The coconut ice cream that was served together was delicious on its own, and did well to compliment the rest of the dessert. I felt it was a well thought out addition, and provided something a bit more tropical than standard vanilla.

Matcha Cheesecake (RM19)

Dense and luxuriously creamy, the bitter afternotes of the uji matcha balanced out the richness of the cheese perfectly. We shared this but I could’ve easily finished a slice on my own.

Next time no sharing 😛

Matcha Pink Macchiato (RM15)
Iced matcha latte with rose cream

The natural colour of this interesting beverage was so appealing. Though Matcha and rose was something i didn’t expect to go together, the flavours both held its own distinct taste while blending harmoniously.

A hidden gem of a place. Would definitely recommend this place for good desserts, interesting drinks and a chill hangout session.
